You will only find this entry exciting if you are also a handspinner. In which case... I have a few new little projects on the go... one of them is turning this into yummy yarn to make into a nice lacey scarf: ![]() ![]() FANTASTIC colours. I have been drooling over it for about a year - I bought it in Bendigo last July and have been doing lots of practice on white merino sliver in preparation for the big moment when I finally pulled it out of the bag for spinning. ![]() This is a two-ply thread. with a 2mm needle for comparison of thickness. I just can't seem to navajo ply nicely, so I've given in and started with a view to making a two-ply. I've split the sliver down the middle and weighed it so it's exactly half, and am going to spin the whole thing in two lots straight from one end to the other, ply them together, and hope that the law of averages makes it approximately even. I'm also wanting to start my gloves, but can't get gauge on 2mm needles, and am going to get some 1.5 or 1.75mm. Insanely thin! But they're gonna be LUSH. With any luck I'll have that rainbow stuff finished by the time Cynth brings me over her grey alpaca sliver that she wants spun up. Yummmm. Where's the sharp wit and excitement, you ask? It's Saturday afternoon, dammit, and I'm vegging. Now, go amuse yourself somewhere else! :-P
the finished cap on the lucky recipient :-) ![]() Well, okay, you can't see it very well, she's a bit blurry but hey, it looks grrrrreat on her! We just walked down to the video store to get a movie (we got Nowhere in Africa, yay) and took some truly nifty photos...
![]() More knitting and spinning stuff tomorrow, since I'm spinning up some stuff tonight. A little less blogversation, and a little more action A finished lace cap! ![]() With any luck I'll convince the lucky recipient to have her photo taken with it on, though she doesn't much like having her "picture took". I was thinking about prayer today. There's been a decent whack of writing done on "infusing" items (like knitted things) with your prayers for people, and it's a pretty old concept, though less utilised these days, especially in Western culture. Zen and the art of knitting talks about this sort of thing, and I'm sure the subject will come up when I do my little spinning and knitting workshops at Hollyfrost later this month. Basically I believe that spellwork, intention, and prayer are different cloths woven from the same thread. They look slightly different in the end product, but are basically the same thing. The short of it is that this little thing that I've knitted for my little sister is pretty much drenched with intention - support, strength and calmness for a really difficult time. At 15, she's done an enormously brave thing leaving all of her family and friends behind and coming from a public, country, all-white, co-ed school to a catholic, city, multicultural (really multicultural) girls school. There's bound to be difficulties, and she seems to be rising to the challenge. So, whether you have a few seconds for a christian prayer, a witch's candle, or a moment to connect to the earth mother, spare a thought for my little sister who's navigating her ways through the murky waters of a new school.
hehehe... Here's the update on Angel's knitted cap. I stuck it on my head to try it on for size, and this is what I looked like, pulling the silliest face that I could: ![]() Och! I think I accidentally hit myself with the ugly stick this morning... *snort* but it's been a big week, and Angel and I both needed a bit of a laugh *grin* I got home yesterday and Angel had done all the housework. Yay! So I'm trying to get her little cap done asap, and the other reason is that I'm wanting to start on my green and white gloves, now that I have this (thanks to my friend Jewel's fantastic online store): ![]() Whee! I can't WAIT until the holidays!!!
Tomorrow is going to be a good day... ...because it will be the first day I've had in over a week that I haven't studied my butt off! Yes, I even got up early on Sunday before the concert and squished in a bit. Scary, but true. So, I have this exam tomorrow, and then I'm going to take it easy for a few days. Yeah! I've taken a little bit of time out tonight to continue the overhaul of the blog, but doing things that you've been putting off for months is standard procrastination behaviour when you're supposed to be doing your last minute revisions, hmm? Any video recommendations, anyone? I live under a rock midsemester... but tomorrow I'm hiring a DVD and pulling out Angela's lace cap to work on. Yay!!!
post concert bliss well, it was a great concert. Thanks to James and his mum, my inlaws Jude and Wally and Jude's cousins, Dave, and my little sister Angel for coming along and getting a big orchestral high along with me. So here I am, in post concert bliss, having ditched the glasses, my shoes, and I'm about to run myself a long hot bath, pretend I don't have any study to do. Yeah! Screw chemical enhancements, natural highs like this just can't be beaten. Just look at this for smug: ![]() So. Anyone who wants to come to the next concert... I'm sure the details will be on this site very soon :-) Funny moment of the week: Cynth and I were hooning along the road around the corner from my place on the motorbike... whahoo! I'm really getting into this pillion passenger thing, wild fun... now the thing is with a passenger, is that it takes a bit longer to slow down. So we pull up at the lights and there's this old guy who's obviously been drinking a bit, who thinks we're going to run him down. He staggers to the very front of the motorbike, and in rolling, sonorous tones proclaims: "JAYsus CHRIST alMIGHTY!!!" at the top of his voice. He rolled the Rrrrrr. His eyes were wide with drunken shock. Cynth and I dissolved, somewhat predictably, into uncontrollable giggles. I promise we weren't going to run him over. Really.
It's not easy being green. But it's really easy being 30! Don't panic, cherubs, I'm not 30 yet. However, the blog has been drenched in green stuff. Yay! I got an excited email from a (somewhat excitable) friend asking if it was my birthday yet, since I'd thrown in an obscure mention of it recently. No dear Lisa, not yet. But soon. I explained to her that I don't do parties (are you kidding? Other peoples' parties are MUCH more fun), and so I wasn't going to tell. Now I think I need to clarify this. I'm not one of those people who say "oh no, I can't tell you when my birthday is" and then secretly hope that people will find out on the sly and then say on my birthday "happy birthday you!" and then go, "aww, you found out, how sweet". Actually, by the time I'd reached about 16 and realised that I was forever going to forget everyone else's birthdays and be unorganised and get them a present 6 months later or... well you get the picture, I'm hopeless, I thought to myself: Easy solution! I'll just forget about mine, too! I usually think of my birthday about this time of year, since May and June are thick with family birthdays. September must just be a really special month for all the people I'm related to. Mine's somewhere in there too, or rather, tacked on to the end of it all, a little whimper after the colossal family fireworks of the June Birthday Peak Rush. My family, since we never did Christmas or Easter, made a big deal about birthdays. So I guess I'm more inclined these days to think of them as a bit of kiddie party, or an excuse to piss up. And hey, I don't need an excuse like a birthday... I'll do it anyway! So. I'm a bit socially inept at times. I'm quite social... but not often appropriately so, if that makes sense. I love talking to people, but I can never remember key points to ask them about their lives, like their kids' names, or their work situation, blah blah blah. So I find the whole birthday thing a bit of a social minefield. If you remember one person's birthday, do you have to remember everyone's? If you forget one person's birthday, do you have to rush out and buy them a huge gift as compensation? If people don't call you do you have to call them? All those nieces and nephews? Cousins? Who goes on the list? What do you do? Me? I just try to pretend they don't exist. If Jehovah's Witnesses worshipped the goddess instead of that JC bloke, I'd be inclined to go with them and say "it's against my religion". Happy un-birthday, all you happy little cherubs! Have a top week. xxx
up late, taking pics, having a drink or two... ![]() Ain't she just the cutest lil sis???
Get me the hell outta here I've survived the majority of the semester, and all of my major assignments have been handed in. There's only one thing left to deal with before holidays. Yup, exams. Blech. So, on today's exciting list of things to do, it's come up with a study plan, and start it pronto. Angela, having moved to the big smoke, has decided that if she's stuck here with me she might as well enjoy it, so she's asked me to take her to the beach today. :-) It's gonna be coooooold! There's no way I'll be getting in the water, so I'll be taking a text book and her uniform, which needs the hem adjusted. Gawd, I've become a mother hen already. Sarah, yesterday, posted a comment saying that if I was after a 2nd hand spinning wheel to "do up" (yes please) just move to where she is. Trust me, I'm tempted. I'm going a bit stir crazy here in the city these days, but I'm not sure I could ever live in the country again. I don't know! *tears hair out* I entertain ideas of running off out of the city, getting myself some sheep and chooks, and maybe running a B&B. I really love living in Sydney... I mean, where else can you duck down to your local playhouse... ![]() to watch a nifty play, with views like this across the water...
I'll probably take more pics at the beach today. Sydney's a bit of a rat race, but as far as cities go it's not too bad. I think it's probably just been way too long since I had a break. So, the other thing that I'm planning on getting done today is to battle on with Angie's knitted cap... ![]() and toddle off to dinner at the Bald Man's with Nick and Andrew. I swear, there are never enough hours.
A woman's weapons Who needs long fingernails to defend one's self when one has a lovely arsenal of second hand needles? ![]() I'm rather chuffed with my little find today, I wandered into one of the local op shops and there was this great big jar chockers with knitting needles. Yeah! So, I got all of the above for $7.50. Bargain. Lots of odd ones there, but you always need a spare or two. No spinning wheels, though. :( Nyeh. You can't win em all.
